Marking your ball on the putting surface is a relatively simple process. Many times it is very necessary to allow others to play free from distraction and to avoid other balls from making contact. The Rules of Golf make a special "Note" in the process by which you should mark a ball in rule 20-1:
Note: The position of a ball to be lifted should be marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object immediately behind the ball. .......
This is a very clear "Note" in the rules of golf that many golfers tend to casually disregard. Please respect the game of golf and follow through this process in the illustrations below:

Step One Here is a ball on the putting surface that is about to be marked.

Step Two-B
"Immediately behind the ball".

Step Two-A
Make sure the mark is "immedieately behind the ball".

Step Two Here a small coin is being placed directly behind the ball. The ball should always be between the hole and the coin.

Step Three- A
Ball is free the view and interference from of others to putt.

Step Three
Go ahead and lift your ball to clean and allow others to putt free from view of your ball.

Step Four-B
Ball is in the original position and in play.

Step Four-A
After making sure the ball is in its original position go ahead and pick up the coin.

Return the ball to its original position.
